Many people believe that today’s catastrophic wildfires are an unavoidable consequence of climate change and modern life. The Salish Firekeepers are actively challenging that narrative. By revitalizing ancestral cultural burning practices, they are restoring long-standing relationships between fire, land, and community. These practices reduce fuel loads, support soil health, and strengthen local plant, animal, and human ecosystems. Narrative Shift produced this video with the Salish Firekeepers Society to highlight the benefits of cultural burning and amplify Indigenous knowledge systems that have stewarded these lands for generations.
